Water-colours
Offers
a blend of tranquility to the pictures' of a pride of place setting,
putting the owner and viewer in a quiet reflective mood. As with
pencil and ink, water-colours can be quick products, yet satisfying
for their transparent colours. On traditional textured paper a
place, people, sports or animals blend sympathetically with home
settings which may have taken years to create.
Bear
in mind water-colours need to be glazed and properly framed to
be fully appreciated. Original works to protect value and looks,
must be kept out of direct sunlight and away from direct heat
such as radiators.
Oils
Oils
are more labour intensive and require long drying times, especially
if a certain traditional look is required. Quality oil on canvas
may take several months to complete from the stage of first drawing
to when the final applied paint decides to dry. Oils are not for
'next week'! However the wait can be worthwhile. Modern oils can
be in wide brush to palette knife, can be impressionistic or bold
and energetic.
Unlike
pencil and water-colour, Oil paintings offer a much greater range
of sizes from miniature to vast; the final size a canvas manufacturer
can manage.
Ink
& pencil
Lends
as a crisp approach to those first ideas which can capture so
well, what you simply want expressed! A little friendly banter
on a friend, refixing in your mind, a fading memory of a dearly
beloved pet or situation. That crisp look may be just what is
needed to fill those little spaces in the home or office where
colour may look too busy. Line work reproduces well and economically,
especially for short lived product needs. Affordable as gifts
or surprises. Line work looks classic in most surroundings.
Cartoons
& Caricatures
The
idea of commissioning a cartoon never really enters the minds
of the majority of folk. Perhaps cartooning is seen as a negative
form of expression. Certainly many cartoonists within political
and social trend forming arenas, spend long hours wrestling within
their own heads in a follow up to long sessions in pubs and shadowy
chambers, ghosted with political whisper. Pensions maybe sacrificed
to cultivate dodgy friendships, make observations, analyse and
evaluate information for those news editors who allow some free
rein.
However cartoons can be positive, friendship forming and group
bonding. A cartoon of a lead figure in the work place can be fun,
focussing on amusing events or character traits, all far removed
from shady political thieving and pick pocketing exposure which
could result in the cartoonists imprisonment (depending on your
country!).
Enough said. So you are thinking of someone
to be cartooned? Not sure however on how to prepare your approach
to the creator of "warts and all folk". Yes you should
tremble. You yourself could in years to come, well find yourself
coming face to face with your stereotype staring from some magazine
lying on a doctor's consultation room table!
You
must first realise that cartoons should teach us to laugh at ourselves,
our involvement's and our groups, our desperate situations by
comparison to others. Secondly, article association is the key.
Link
your target to what they are known for and consider if he or she
has certain sensitivities to be spared, but if you are planning
a return jab, then this is the essential strength of a cartoon.
Exaggerate with a little colouring, but don't tell lies!
Take a peek at the "boss"
in toons 2 and the "Master Blaster"
from above menu.
Sharing
Views. Put your intentions to your friends, introduce doodled
ideas. Activity will soon begin within a mixed circle. Your doodles
will be reviewed, added to and finally there will be a collection
with highlights. A detailed background of the cartoonee will emerge
for a final product with a story line of perhaps some past mishap.
Identifiable physical characteristics will be finally agreed.
One eyebrow is higher than the other and the nostril hair would
make good shaving brushes. They do stoop as though well potty
trained!
Material
Required. Before I can portray your victim, er close friend, assassination
or bonding is better achieved if I know what the poor soul looks
like. To enable me to do this, clear photos will be needed, preferably
current, not those of ten years ago from the times he or she was
taller and with a full head of hair. Side views and full on please,
to forgive the pun! ideally, head and shoulder shots and if they
have a distinctive physique, a full body shot. Plus any doodles
you and your cavern cohorts have produced. Where possible, you
should supply photograph copies, not treasured originals.
